All engineering projects have an impact on the Water Services Division and this requires a unique relationship between the two divisions. The Project Division remains a partner for the duration of the guarantee period. Brief Description on some key projects: Pilanesberg Bulk Water Supply Scheme Bulk water supply to a number of new platinum mines in the Pilanesberg area initiated the upgrading and extension of Magalies Water’s Vaalkop Water Treatment Works; it’s bulk distribution network and storage facilities. The affected areas north and south of the Pilanesberg. A collaboration agreement was reached between Magalies Water and the mines for the swift implementation of the Pilanesberg Bulk Water Supply Scheme. Total expected cost is estimated at approximately R860 million for the Pilanesberg North scheme and some R350 million for the Pilanesberg South Scheme.
Bulk consumers that will benefit from the Pilanesberg North Scheme include two new platinum mines north of the Pilanesberg, Moses Kotane Local Municipality and Thabazimbi Local Municipality. Construction has already commenced on some parts of this scheme, and construction on the remaining sections of the scheme will commence during the 2009/2010 financial year. It is anticipated that the Pilanesberg North scheme will be in full operation by end 2010. Bulk consumers that will benefit from the Pilanesberg South Scheme include two new platinum mines to the south of the Pilanesberg, Moses Kotane Local Municipality and Rustenburg Local Municipality. The Pilanesberg South scheme should be operational by end 2012. Refurbishment Programme (2007/08) Moretele and Rustenburg Local Municipalities
Moretele and Rustenburg Local Municipalities have retained Magalies Water’s appointment as Implementing Agent for their 2007/2008 Refurbishment Programme. Retail Projects (City of Tshwane Capital Projects) Suurman/Majaneng and Ramotse/Marokolong. The projects are implemented by City of Tshwane (CoT) within the Magalies Water area of supply. The contract consists of the installation of new water lines, metered yard connections and remedial work on existing water lines. All illegal house connections must also be removed. A number of new bulk infrastructure projects are currently either in the implementation phase (under construction or in tender stage), or due for implementation during the next financial year. The below table illustrates the projects executed on behalf of the CoT
Quartely updates from January to March 2010
The Vaalkop Bulk Water Supply System (pipelines, pump stations and storage reservoirs) is currently upgraded and extended to supply an additional 70 Ml/day to the north and south of the Pilanesberg to four mines and three water services authorities (Moses Kotane Local Municipality, Thabazimbi Local Municipality and Rustenburg Local Municipality). The Vaalkop Water Treatment Works will however only be extended with two 30 Ml/day modules to treat an additional 60 Ml/day. These extensions all form part of the Pilanesberg Bulk Water Supply Scheme that is implemented jointly between Magalies Water and the affected mines. To this extent a collaboration agreement was entered into between the four mines and Magalies Water for the swift implementation of the scheme. The current worldwide economic climate caused the swift implementation of the scheme being delayed and as indicated above, the first phase of this scheme to the area north of the Pilanesberg including the first 30 Ml/day module at the treatment works should be in full operation by end 2010. The second phase to the area south of the Pilanesberg including the second 30 Ml/ day module at the treatment works should be in full operation by end 2012.
Wallmansthal Bulk Water Supply System
In order to supply in the growing demand of the Roodeplaat Development Area within the Nokeng -Tsa -Taemane Local Municipality, the Wallmannsthal Bulk Water Supply System needs major upgrading and extensions. The first phases of these upgrades and extensions were completed, namely the 10 Ml Baviaanspoort Reservoir and the 10 Ml/day Roodeplaat-Wallmannsthal Rising Main. These upgradings were completed and commissioned by the end of the 2008/2009 financial year. Additional storage reservoirs for the Wallmannsthal-Roodeplaat area are planned by Magalies Water and by Nokeng -Tsa –Taemane Local Municipality. Magalies Water is planning an additional 25 Ml Reservoir at the Wallmannsthal Reservoir site, while Nokeng -Tsa -Taemane is planning a new 5 Ml Reservoir in the Derdepoort area. The capital expenditure for the 25 Ml Magalies Water reservoir is estimated at some R29 million, and it is expected that this reservoir will be constructed over two financial years. Further bulk water supply network upgrading in excess of R27 million will also be done during the 2009/2010 financial year.
Klipdrift Bulk Water Supply System
The Klipdrift Bulk Water Supply System needs to be upgraded with an additional 10 Ml Storage Reservoir. A new pump-station and rising main from the Klipdrift Water Treatment Works needs to be constructed to supply in the Nokeng -Tsa -Taemane demand for Steve Bikoville. The total expected capital expenditure over two financial years amounts to some R12 million. Plant extension and additional on site storage capacity is also planned for to a total amount of some R52 million over the next three financial years. |
