Magalies Water is privileged to be in a position to give back to the communities we operate within. In the past year, we were fortunate enough to touch numerous lives through CSI initiatives that were carried out at some of the municipalities.
Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) concrete toilets with cisterns and wash basins were installed at Tsakane Village to address sanitation issues. These VIP toilets will benefit 50 households.
A proper paypoint is currently under construction at Ramotse Village to create a safe and secure method to pay out funds to pensioners. As soon as the project is completed in the next financial year, no less than 150 pensioners will benefit from it.
A leaking reservoir was resealed in the Alma Village and an additional storage capacity of 3ML/day was created. A total of 1 553 community members are now benefiting from the increased water supply capacity.
Water storage and supply capacity was increased at the Mogogelo Village. This directly touches the lives of more than 2300 community members.
Through additional water connections from the Rustenburg Local Municipality, 786 members of the Lekgalong community now have access to water consistently.
New boreholes were drilled and fitted in the Bapong area to improve water supply. The boreholes will further be tested for water quality and quantity. It is expected that a population of 15 468 will be supplied from this infrastructure.
Magalies Water grants a number of external bursaries to members of the youth studying through Orbit TVET Colleges within Magalies Water areas of operations. The bursaries are offered to students studying qualifications in the fields of electrical, mechanical, chemical and civil engineering. After completion of studies, learners are offered an experiential training period of 12 months. The internship programme can increase chances of graduates finding permanent employment.
Magalies Water runs an initiative that facilitates training for the up-skilling of home-based care givers of those who are infected by HIV/Aids. In the 2014/2015 financial year, 18 such home-based care givers were trained in the Tlhabane area.
Our learnership programme is just one of the skills development initiative, the programme is aimed at developing youth within the community. This is done by improving the skills in the study fields of water treatment and water reticulation processes and control.
During the programme, learners are exposed to our Water Treatment Plants (WTPs). They are given invaluable opportunities to understand and learn about the potable water processing – and why and how to conserve water. During our 2014/2015 financial year only – a total of 50 learners were recruited for the programme.
The Magalies Water internship programme aims to provide unemployed graduates with opportunities to actively acquire new skills – and to gain experience in a learning environment. This will help to improve their chances of entering the labour market of their choice.
In the 2014/2015 financial year, our internship programme made it possible for six graduates to gain exposure in the supply chain management (SCM), infrastructure maintenance and scientific services disciplines.
Our capacity building programme is aimed at empowering graduate engineers through experiential training – that will help them turn their engineering knowledge into marketable skills. The programme also provides them with exposure to relevant engineering practices under the mentorship of senior engineers.
Following a strict selection process, ten graduates were recruited in the fields of civil and mechanical engineering in the 2014/2015 financial year. Nine of them were from the Tshwane University of Technology (TuT) and one from the University of Pretoria. Our current capital expansion programme implementation created an ideal, hands-on and practical learning environment for these candidates.
Our enterprise development programme is aimed at developing unemployed youth by first teaching them creative or other client services skills. This includes the likes of bead work, candle making, catering and décor, corporate gifts, accessories, events management, computer training and flower arrangement.
Immediately after, they are equipped with the necessary knowledge to turn their new skills into a business. Upon completion, some of them become entrepreneurs and some of them are given the opportunity to render services to Magalies Water.
This programme is aimed at giving our youth new hope – to start participating in our country’s economy. It equips them with the necessary tools to search and apply for jobs – and proactively pursue their career dreams. The training includes much-needed career seeking elements such as: CV development, preparation for job interviews, life and presentation skills, as well as job placement and career guidance,
Specifically designed for youth in rural areas – the Magalies Water health and environment education programme aims to achieve two key outcomes. Firstly, it aspires to improve the mental and psychological health and wellbeing of our young people. Secondly, it serves to make them aware of why and how to care for our environment.
To this end, the programme addresses issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, depression, suicide, youth crime – and the Green Economy.
